Why don't people talk more in elevators? Why is there always this heavy uncomfortable silence and foot shuffling? Like funeral home silence. We stare down and study shoes and toenail polish and occasionally look up. If eye contact is made, its only briefly and is followed by a quick, almost apologetic, smile. Like "Oops! You caught me looking at you. Sorry."
